November 28th, 2013 - Removed the Long distance walking WebRing on the Walking frontpage. WebRing becomes increasingly aggressive in trying to direct travic to their site. Was fed up with it.

January 15th, 2010
- Uploaded a preliminary, restyled home page. To make room for more topics the Long distance walking pages have been moved to a seperate section of the site, the so-called Walking section. The non-walking options are now more prominent present at the site. Over the coming weeks a blog, Wikji's Wereld, a photo album, my research interests, Sandra's onderzoekspagina for her high school students will become available. The site main language changed from English to Dutch. Generally a large overhaul for the pages already available.

February 27th, 2007 - Added a favicon to the site ... that is the small icon you see in the address bar of your browser.

February 25th, 2007 - Minor adjustments and revisions throughout the site including addition of new links to the Scotland, North England and Southwest England walking pages, and the Links page. I took the non-walking part of this site out of the air as it needs some thorough revision. The last time I looked at this end of the site was in 2001 just before I quit my job at the university and started working for my current employer. I will revitilise the non-walking part as soon as I find the time for it.

November 11th, 2006 - Minor adjustments to the Revision page and addition of links throughout the site.

November 5th, 2006 - After several years of gathering electronic dust I finally found enough courage to update the site again. Building a site is easy, maintaining it is the biggest challenge. For a start I updated the dead or redirection links. In a short while (no not after three years!) I will surf the web to see if there are any new additions worth linking. And you may have noticed this site celebrates its 10th anniversary! It started as just a page in 1996 with a number of links on the Utrecht University server. Enjoy your stay!

August 5th, 2003 - Normal maintenance, added some new links and removed broken ones throughout the site. I also updated the text on the pages about equipment and rescanned most of the images on the equipment pages.

February 17th, 2003 - Normal maintenance, added new and removed broken links throughout the site.

December 24th, 2002 - Replaced all the imagemaps in the Maps section with new ones. I also added the Great Glen Way and St Cutberth's Way to the map of Scotland.

December 1st, 2002 - Added the Great Glen Way to the lists of long distance walks in Scotland. Found several new sites worth linking to both with personal accounts of different walks and more general sites with information for walkers. Also been playing with some lay-out features of the site.

November 17th, 2002- Removed broken links, still looking for new additions. Also corrected a not properly working imagemap Southwest).

January 6th, 2002 - Finally updated the WebRing information. Graphs, links and webring information is now as it should be. Hope this new WebRing system will last longer than its Yahoo predecessor! Also joined an additional ring: The long distance walkers webring. Furtermore, I added new and removed broken links.

November 9th, 2001 - Checked and update links throughout the site. Let me know if I have overseen some broken links. By the way on October 31st, 2001 this site celebrated its fifth anniversary! Although an earlier version was already up and running in the summer of 1995, I waited until October 31st, 1996 to put a NedStat counter on the site.

June 17th, 2001 - Checked and update links throughout the site.

May 22nd, 2001 - A site is never perfect the first time it is put on the web. I encountered over the past three weeks some minor errors and corrected them.

May 5th, 2001 - I said I was thinking about revamping the site. Well, what do you think? As all mainstream browsers are nowadays capable of using frames and scripts. And more and more sites are switching to heavy graphics, I could not stay behind. Thus, I changed all pages to a basic two frame window and replaced the headers with graphics. The contents has remained the same although I have put some effort in reducing the size (in kb) of the pages by splitting them in seperate ones. An example is the page about safety issues. I still have to redo the maps showing the different long distance walks. I want them to have the same look as the rest of the site. However, as this is a lot of work I will gradually redraw them. This also enables me to add new walks to the maps. Finally, as Britain finally coverts to the SI system of units I changes al distances and heights to the metric system. Let me know what you think!

March 11th, 2001 - Updated the statistics page.

February 28th, 2001 - Some basic maintanance, removed broken links and added some new links to the different pages in the Regions section. I have been thinking about restructuring and revamping the site ... but no definite changes yet.
I also added a Google search box to the links page. Uptil now Google is the only search engine which always returned usable pages of the most remote long distance walk I entered. See for yourself!

October 1st, 2000 - As Xs4all has now a luxureous 50 Mb available for every homepage I made some changes so that pages concerning other topics than walking in Britain can be accomodated. For example, pages concerning my research or those maintained by my wife. There is a new crossroad page where you can access them all. To the Walking in Britain site I have added a new page with photographs of Rievaulx and Whitby abbey. Also added new pictures to the set of York.

July 3rd, 2000 - Repaired broken links in the pages concerning the Coast to Coast Walk and the Westhighland Way. Added links and restored or removed broken ones on almost all pages. Replaced several images by better quality ones.

February 1st, 2000 - New year already a month old and finally found some time to update the links on the various pages. I found some new sites and added them to the appropiate page (see e.g. the links page and regional pages). I also removed some broken ones. I also updated the Coast to Coast pages. I replaced the images by better and smaller ones and ... added a few new photographs.

December 1st, 1999 - More additions to the Scenery page, I added more assorted pictures from the southwest and southeast coast, including a page with some photographs taken at Stonehenge. There are some links added. I haven't checked the excisting links, if there is a broken one please let me know !

October 31st, 1999 - Updated the Westhighland Way pages. Removed typo's and replaced all the bulky gif-pictures by smaller, more beautifully jpg versions. Also added or changed the pictures on the Scotland, Southwest and Middle England page. But at last ... after two years I made a start with the Scenery page. The first additions are pictures from Scotland, or more specific from the Hebrides (Skye and Lewis), York and assorted pictures fron the southwest coast of England.

September 1st, 1999 - Added links to some of the pages including the general Links page, also removed or restored broken or changed URL's whenever possible. I added a special page with links to sites with information about a special walk. The End to End walk taking the walker from Land's End to John O'Groats. Finally, I became member of the Walkers and Hikers Webring. A service to you, the websurfer!

May 29th, 1999 - Added links to the pages about walks in North England and Wales.

April 25th, 1999 - Update, restored and added links to all the walking pages.

March 1st, 1999 - I transfered pages about my Ph.D.-researh from the University server to the this one. The site at the university is no longer available because I (officially) stopped working there. The Research pages can be accessed through the main page of the walking site.

January 30st, 1999 - Normal maintanance i.e. restoring/removing broken links, adding a few others etc. I removed the no-frame version of the page with all the maps. Also removed the Add Me! gif from the About page because of the terrible slow server!

January 15th, 1999 - I used Add Me! for submitting the URL of this site to several search engines. In return I added a gif and link to the About page.

January 1st, 1999 - Removed relics from an earlier version. I have added a site map, accessible through the About page, added a few links ... and finished the maps!!! I have added maps showing the walks listed in South West England and Scotland. Have a happy, walkable new year!

November 30th, 1998 - Removed and restored broken links and added several others.

November 14th, 1998 - Increased the font size throughout the site.

November 3rd, 1998 - Changed the way to access the maps which show the different walks. The original page showing all the maps on one page is still available. However, the default link now will take the browser to a page with frames. The top of the page showing which maps are available, the main part will show the map selecte. In my opinion this is an elegant solution, reducing download times. Added a map for South East England and made links to this map wherever necessary. Also did the normal maintanance thing like removing/restoring broken links.

October 13th, 1998 - Corrected some mistakes (thanks John Moore).

October 11th, 1998 - Added and changed the position of a few links on the links page and added two newsgroups dedicated to walking. Added under Equipment and Pests on the Safety page links to sites containing information about equipment essential for a long walk and some links to new pages and photographs from my own collection. Removed some typing errors (dank je Vincent).
